Daniel Burnham, the great American architect of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, once said, “Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood”. We took it to heart.
The effort began when I ran the due diligence program for the successful acquisition of eighteen downtown Newark development sites, well-located north of Market Street and west of Broad Street. Then I built and ran the team that developed an innovative master plan organized around the concept that downtown Newark can, and should, be a lively neighborhood where people live and work, as well as a new downtown destination that anchors the surrounding counties. We saw new, upscale places to live, new dining, drinking, and entertainment spots, and shopping opportunities ranging from national retailers to local artisans.
It's a big plan: 3,000 apartments, 277,000 SF of retail space, new public park space, and sidewalk and streetscape improvements. We also designed it so that it could be built out in response to absorption in the market. Unfortunately, the financial crisis intervened and we had to turn our efforts elsewhere. But the work we did still influences the development of downtown Newark.
